Dealing with the after effects of traumatic events

Traumatic events

A traumatic event is an event that is experienced as shocking and painful, causing a stress level beyond what we normally tolerate. Events like these usually happen all of a sudden and beyond one’s control, and often of the type that might put human lives in danger, for example the sudden death of a loved family member, a rape, a miscarriage, traffic accident, an earthquake, fire a flood and also a boom blast like the ones happening in Indonesia recently, among others. The stress reaction that a person experiences after these events is called traumatic stress, or often simply called trauma.

Sign of traumatic stress

These are a number of sign that tell whether a person is experiencing traumatic stress. Remember the people might react differently to any kind of circumstances. So it’s entirely possible for people to actually suffer from trauma even though they don’t show all of the following symptoms:

1. Repeated memory of the events, or more precisely images repeating themselves over and over in the person’s mind. For some people, it might seem as if the tragedy is happening all over again. They might also feel distressed if faced with anything that might remind them of the event, for instance something that they see, hear, feel, smell, or sense on the skin.
2. Difficulty controlling emotions, especially in relation with the overwhelming experience.
3. Reaction that was not typical of the person before the traumatic event, such as becoming easily sad, or easily angry, wanting to cry.
4. A tendency to isolate oneself from others and avoid getting out of the house as often as before .
5. Nervousness and anxiety .
6. Intense alertness and an overprotective attitude toward oneself and loved ones.
7. Having difficulty sleeping and having nightmare.
Eating problems (appetite loss or increase)
Inability to concentrate.

Theme-based Teaching

In order to distinguish theme-based teaching from content-based teaching, it is important to distinguish between what I will call “strong” and “weak” versions of content-based teaching (not to be confused in any way with “good” and “bad”). In the strong version, the primary purpose of a course is to instruct students in a subject-matter area. Of secondary and subordinate interest language. All four of the examples of content-based instruction named above are good illustrations of the strong version. English for specific purposes (ESP) at the university level, for example, gathers engineering majors together in a course designed to teach terminology, concepts, and current issues in engineering. Because students are ESL students, they must of course learn this material in English, which the teacher is prepared to help them with. Immersion and sheltered programs, along with programs in writing across the curriculum are similarly focused.

A weak form of content-based teaching actually pieces of an equal value on content and language objectives. While the curriculum, to be sure, is organized around subject-matter area, both students and teachers are fully aware that language skills do not occupy a subordinate role. Students have no doubt chosen to take a course or curriculum because their language skills need improvement, and they are now able to work toward that improvement without being battered with linguistically based topic. The ultimate payoff is that their language skills are indeed enhanced, but through focal attention to topic, and peripheral attention to language.

The major principles underlying both theme-based and content-based instruction are:
1. the automaticity principle
2. the meaningful learning principle
3. the intrinsic motivation principle
4. the communicative competence principle

All these principles are well served by themed-based instruction and/or by courses that are successfully able to get students excited and interested in some topic, issue, idea, or problem rather than bored or weary of overanalyzing linguistic rules.

Numerous current ESL textbooks, especially at the intermediate to advanced levels, offer theme-based courses of study. Such textbooks catch the curiosity and motivation of students with challenging topics and as they grapple with a whole. Array of real-life issues ranging from simple to complex; they can also focus on improving their linguistic skills.

Content-based Teaching

The first of the five models of integrated-skills approaches is content-based instruction. Quite simply, content-based (also known as “content-centered”) language teaching integrated the learning of some specific subject-matter content with the learning of a second language. The overall structure of a content-based curriculum, in contrast to many traditional language curricula, is dictated more by the nature of the subject matter than by language forms and sequences. The second language, then, is simply the medium to convey informational content of interest and relevance to the learner.

Here are some examples of content-based curricula:
- Immersion programs for elementary school children
- Sheltered English programs (mostly found at elementary and secondary school levels)
- Writing across the curricula (where writing skills in secondary schools and universities are taught within subject matter areas like biology, history, art, etc)
- English for specific purposes (ESP)

It is perhaps already clear that content-based teaching allows learners to acquire knowledge and skills that transcend all the bits and pieces of language that may occupy hours and days of analyzing in a traditional language classroom. Research on second language acquisition at various ages indicates the ultimate strength of learning that is pointed toward practical non-language goals. The meaningful learning principle applies well here. Learners are focused on very useful, practical objectives as the subject matter is perceived to be relevant to long term goals. This also increases the intrinsic motivation that is so important to learning of any kind.

Content-based teaching presents some challenges to language teachers. Allowing the subject matter to control the selection and sequencing of language items means that you have to view your teaching from an entirely different perspective. You are first and foremost teaching geography or math or culture; secondarily you are teaching language. So you may have to become a double expert! There are some team-teaching models of content-based teaching, however, that alleviate this potential drawback.

Content-based teaching instruction allows for the complete integration of language skills. As you plan a lesson around a particular sub-topic of your subject matter area, your task becomes one how best to present that topic or concept or principle. In such lesson it would be difficult not to involve at least three of the four skills as you have students reading, discussing, solving problems, analyzing data, writing opinions and reports.

Aretha Franklin (The Queen of Soul)

"There are certain murical notes that can be played on a saxophone that are chilling; similarly, there are sounds above the twelfth fret on guitar that are orgasmic. Aretha Franklin is better than any instrumen, as she can hit notes that do not exist in industrumental terms." Lycos Music

:-P The quote above, indeed, is only one of the many high praises addressed to this big and beautiful lady, Aretha Franklin. When she was a little girl, Aretha often sang with her sisters, Carolyn and Erma, at the Detroit church where her father, Reverend C.L.Franklin, preached. She became a featured solo vocalist in her church choir when she was 12 and made her first recording as a gospel artist two years after. John Hammond, the famous talent scout, was one of the people who brought Aretha to popularity.

Many hits by Aretha, especially those made in the early '70s, were huge successes, for example, "Spanish Harlem," Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Day Dreaming," etc. She was even more triumphant after producing the admirable albums live at Fillmore West and Amazing Grace.

With her songs claiming the first place in R'nB lists twenty times and the Grammy Awards that she, the first artists ever, won every year between 1960 and 1975, it was no wonder that Aretha was crowned "The Queen of Soul" in th 60's, a title that she till proudly wears now. She was the first woman in Rock and Roll hall of fame. She got a lifetime award in 1995. She is the inspiration for Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige.;-D:-q

U2 (A school band that never ends)

"They are the only band that's been around for twenty years with no member changes and no big splits". Chris Martin (Coldplay)

What would have happend if no one had answered Larry Mullen Jr.'s advertisement for establishing a rock band, back in 1976? Great songs like "With or With out You," "When the Streets Have No Name" and "Beautiful Day" would never have existed. Initially named FEEDBACK, Paul Hewson a.k.a Bono (vocal), Adam Clayton (bass), David Evans a.k.a the Edge (guitars, keyboards), Larry Mullen (drums), and Dick Evans played the ROLLING STONES's and BEATLES songs. Before they took the name U2, this band used the name HYPE in 1977. Soon after, Dick Evans left the band to set up the VIRGIN PRUNES and the foursome changed the name into U2.

Though U2 is very famous and successful now, their journey to get to the top wasn't that smooth. They won a talent contest in 1978 but they failed in an audition with CBS Records. But when they released their debut EP "U2:3" in 1979, the record topped the lrish charts. In early 1980, they signed a contract with Universal and released their debut, "Boy". But it was "Joshua Tree," that made them become one of the most successful rock bands ever. Within 28 hours since its release, the album went platinum! What a milestone! They are the only band that has four different songs on one album win several categories in the 2000 and 2001 Grammy Awards! They have been together for more than 20 years and they still show no sign of quitting.B-);-)

MetamorphDONNA

"i'm sorry, but i'd rather meet Madonna than the president of the United States. Madonna has this thing about her that you can't explain-the thing that makes somebody a star." Britney Spears

Madonna is an undeniable existence in showbiz. She's always been the dazzling sparkle in the industry. With her album Like a Virgin, she started her fame with the naughty girl look in her shredded wedding dress and veil, just when other female singers were trying to look cutie nice. And when every girl imiatated her style by wearing big shiny cross pendants, she movem on and set another trend in True Blue: displaying a fress look with her short blond hair, wearing a pointy bustier (Jean Paul Gaultier specially designed for her) to show off her muscle.

She's a real style inventor! That way, she's successfully enlightened society, that a beautiful voice alone is not enough to guarantee fame. Not everybody thinks Madonna's voice is extraordinary, but she has her style. Her voice is so Madonna. But which artist can stand a whole 2 hour concert singing various kinds of songs, mostly those with a fast beat, while dancing energetically, and managing to change outfits for almost every song?

Only Madonna can do that, and she did it in her True Blue concert. Other female singers would end up being out of breath and they wouldn't even bother to change their custome that frequently. Stamina has always been Madonna's nick name, as her muscular body testifies, despite her very feminine look.

Plasma versus Tubes

Wave to the future
These days you might all be pretty familiar with plasma TVs or monitors. They are those flat and slim TV monitors that are as slim like pictures, that you can easily hang on the wall. What is the difference between Plasma TV and regular CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) TV?

First we have to know the basic principles of regular TV which uses a CRT. A CRT is basically a vacuum tube (almost like a light bulb) where electrons (negatively-charged particles) are shot through the tube to the wide end of the tube, where phospor atoms will light up. Shooting different levels of colors at different intensities produces different colors, that's why you can see picture on your TV tube.

One weakness of a CRT is that it needs a longer shooting distance when you want to enlarge the size of the screen. So for a widescreen, the TV set becomes bigger and bulkier.

Plasma: a space-saving solution
The new plasma TV has a screen as wide as the largest CRT TV set, but is only 15 cm thick. Neat, huh? Why can a plasma TV be so space efficient? A plasma TV consist of hundreds of thousands of small cells that contain xenon and neon gas (yep, same as your fluorescent lamps). Those cells are sandwiched between two plates of glass. Also sandwiched are electrodes behind and in front of the cells. These electrodes are charged with different currents, thus ionizing the gas inside the cell. The gas will then produce ultraviolet light, which is visible to human eyes.

The advantage of using plasma display technology is that you can produce ultra large screens using super thin materials. The image is also very clear because each pixel is lit individually making the image look good from almost every angle. But the biggest drawback is the price. Plasma displays cost from $4,000 to $20,000. But with the development of new technology, prices are going down to as low as $300, as you can see with today's computer monitors. One day you might find hanging your TV as easy as hanging your babe's picture.

Spice, Smoke, Stress, and Stubborn Germ (A closes look at gastritis)

Gastritis may not kill people by the millions. But it does disrupt a lot of serious study sessions, fun trips, fantastic parties, and yes, even a romantic moment or two..Learn more!

The Stomach
The stomach is the first stop in the process of food digestion. In its j-shapped cavity, the stomach churns the food into much smaller bits, using powerful grinding motions. The inner walls of the stomach, also called stomach lining, are bathed in about a gallon of stomach acid and digestive enzymes. These juices prepare the food for further absorption in the intestines.

Gastritis
Gastritis happens when the stomach lining is irrited (the same kind of effect that happens if you scratch your skin too long and too hard); inflamed (the same kind of thing that happens when a mosquito bites you; there's swelling, sensitivity to touch, a raise in temperature and redness); or infected (the way an open wound will get if you don't clean it immediately).

Symptoms
Usually, a person with gastritis will feel some cramps and pains in the middle or left upper belly, just under the ribs. Other symptoms include nausea and vomiting, bloating (the feeling that the stomach is full of gas) and belching. A wound in the stomach is called a gastriculcer and it causes more pain then ordinary gastritis. Blood may appear in vomit or stool, and this loss of blood may cause anemia, which will make the person feel weak, tired and dizzy. When there is an infection, there usually is a fever.

Causes
It used to be thought that the causes of gastritis are spicy food, alcohol, and lifestyle related factors like stress, along with long-term use of some painkillers and anti-inflammation drugs like aspirin and ibuprofen. But in the early eighties a bacterium called Helicobacter Pylori was found to be responsible for most cases of gastritis and gastric ulcer. These tricky bacteria are not killed by stomach acid because they live within the gel-like mucus membrane that protects the stomach from its own acid.

Bob Marley (No Reggae, No Peace)

No Reggae, No Peace
"...it's hard to compare him to other musicians, because music was just one part of what he was..."-Wyclef Jean (Former Fugees)

Bob Marley was born on February 6, 1945, in a small village called Nine Miles, in Jamaica. His father was a white British Naval officer named Noval Marley, his mother's name was Cedelia. Bob launched his first record at the age of 16 in Kingston with a song called "Judge Not". In 1963 Bob formed a band called the Wailers launching "Summer Down", which became an instant hit in Jamaica. In 1972, international recognition came after the album Catch a Fire was released.

Later, due to some international problems, the original members left The Wailers leaving only Bob Marley. Bob Marley went on with a new band line up and released Natty Dread, which was a major success. Bob Marley's fans at that time includes Beatles George and Ringo, Bob Dylan and Jack Nicholson.

Bob Marley received a United Nations Peace Medal in New York after his concert on April 22, 1978. The concert witnessed two war-ring leaders in Jamaica shaking hands, an incredible event at the time. Being close related to politics in Jamaica made Bob Marley an assassination target. But he survived the attempt and went on with his concert with his hand on slings.

His last concert was on September 23, 1980 in Pittsburgh when he was already diagnosed of having brain and lung cancer. Bob died on May 11, 1981 in Miami and was buried in his birthplace, Nine Miles, in Jamaica. Today, reggae is considered the music of peace, friendship and happiness due to its slow and happy beat. Peace, man!!

The Grammar Translation Method

A historical sketch of the last hundred years of language teaching really must be set in the context of a prevailing, customary language teaching "tradition." for centuries, there were few if any theoretical foundations of language learning upon which to base teaching methodology. In the western world, "foreign" language learning in schools was synonymous with the learning of latin or Greek. Latin, thought to promote intellectuality through "mental gymnastics." was until relatively recently held to be indispensable to an adequate higher education.

Latin was taught by means of what has been called the classical method: focus on grammatical rules, memorization of vocabulary and of various declensions and conjugations, translations of texts, doing written exercises. As other languages began to be taught in educational institutions in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the classical method was adopted as the chief means for teaching foreign languages.

The story of Jimi Hendrix

"Are you experienced." "When i think of Hendrix, i thinh of some of the most placid, lovely guitar sound on songs like little wing"- John Mayer

Born as John Allen Hendrix at King Country Hospital, Seattle on November 27, 1942, this guitar player was renamed James Marshal by his father, shortly after his mother abandoned him. As a child he loved to listen to his father's R&B and blues record. That was how he learned music, by listening, since he could neither read or write music. Not long after his father gave him a small guitar when he was five, jimi could already play the songs he heard from the radio and records.

During his teens jimi played with local bands in Seattle. Jimi joined the army 1961 but quit the next year. After quitting, he played guitar for little Richard, Sam Cooke ame the Isley Brothers. In 1966, he met Chas Chandler, the former bass player for the Animals, and was invited to london. After he moved to London, his success came quickly. Chas Chandler became Jimi's manager and Jimi formed The Jimi Hendrix Experience and recorded 'Hey Joe', which was released at the end of the year. The rest was history.

The way the left-handed guitar player performed in front of live audience has changed the rock scene in particular. But with his unpredictable talent and style, Jimi has influenced every genre of music, ranging from rock to soul, blues to pop, jazz to rap and modern music in countless aspect. Jimi died at the age of 27 from an overdose of sleeping pills and alcohol but his songs are still played by many musicians. "Little Wing" was played by Skid Row, Metallica, The Corrs and many other artists from various music scenes on album and live
